This piece was poured in Jackie Lau's Outreach Class in the fall of 2012. I had carved the wax during the summer before class started and had selected the rock base as part of the piece so that Pele might be seen bursting forth from the angled moss rock. Bronze @ 12 "
Dancer
This bronze was also poured in fall 2012 in Jackie Lau's class. The skirt acts like a bell when struck, The imu was cast with the figure and separated for mounting. Bronze @ 12"
The Paddler
My first bronze casting, this image of a Hawaiian paddling in an outrigger in cutaway was a labor of love. Affectionately dubbed my $300 doorstop, it was a great learning experience about carving in wax and hot bronze casting. The piece was poured in fall of 2011 as part of Jackie Lau's Outreach College class in lost wax casting. Bronze @ 12 "
The happy sculptor
The sculptor with his pieces from fall '12. This photo gives viewers some idea of scale. Below are pieces in process in the studio. Wahine is shown with sprue brace after pouring and The Paddler shown with spruing in place ready to be encased in plaster.
Wahine
This generic portrait of a Hawaiian woman with a hibiscus in her hair was pieced together from scrps of wax from the Paddler and cast as my second piece in Jackie Lau's class during fall 2011. The hollow head without a necl uses the stiffness of the medium as its own stand, with a small pencil-sized cylinder of bronze acting as a mounting post into the moss rock base. Bronze @ 16"
