Behind the Shave Ice Stand

Diamond Head Lighthouse Sketches

Picture
A smaller even looser image of the lighthouse throught the trees and shadows. (5X& Original)

Picture
The lighthouse standing tall amid the overgrowth. (5X7 Original)

Picture
The double entendre of the lighthouse as a warning to ships and the sign telling visitors to steer cleaear was too good to pass up.  (5X7 Original)

Harbormaster's House

Picture
This unique design of double-deck lanais and Hawaiian roof has always caught my eye.  This watercolor is the closest I've come yet to capturing its allure, (11X 15 orginal on 300 lb paper)

Some thumbnails from the same sheet

Picture
These watercolor sketches help me use the full sheet of stretched paper on my watercolor board.  Above Waimea shows the classic rock from which people line up to jump (only in Hawaii).  This is a very loose and gestured sketch that could be a study for another larger work.  5X7 original

Off Waimea

Picture
A lazy sailboat rolling in the waves on a sunny day. 5X7

Far from Rescued

Picture
These sunbathers were far from the water and the guard tower in an odd juxtaposition. 5X7

Behind Matsumotos

Picture
Sunlight and shadows played on tree trunks behind the shave ice store.

Waiahole Poi Factory

Picture
This watercolor was done from an iphone photo and a series of sketches done on site along the east shore of O`ahu.   The building was recently featured in a news story about its owners and their expanding menu of culturally relevent items.  (11X 15 original)

Poi Factory Sketches

Picture
These 5X7 sketches capute the same scene.

Sunlit Fronds

Picture
This loose oil captures the sunlight filtering through the palms in our backyard.  Painted in two steps, the brighter sharper colors were added over a looser darker bakground after it dried.  (Oil on canvas 16X20)

Waiahole View

Picture
This oil was painted from an iPhone photo and two plein air sketches , captuing the northeast view of the Ko`olaus and Mokoli`i.  (16X20 oil on canvas)

Ala Wai Boat Harbor

Picture
This oil was done from a photo taken from Magic Island and modified in iPhoto.  The blended tones of the background allow a sharper focus on the main elements.   (16X 20 oil on canvas)

Waiahole Study I

Picture
This plein air captures the backdrop of the Kualoa area Ko`oalus and Chinaman's Hat.

Waiahole Study II

Picture
A looser second attempt brings more of the overarching tree into the composition.

Bringing Down the Mainsail

Picture
This watercolor was done from a photo taken from Magic Island on a brisk afternoon with Diamondhead in the background.
(8X10 watercolor)

Long Pole

Picture
The breakwater at Magic island allowed this fisherman some meditative time.   (Watercolor 11X14)

First Friday

Picture
Chinatown corner on a rainy First Friday was painted in the garage from an iphone snapshot.  This small image captures the reflections of street lights and shops in wet pavement.  (8X10 original)

Chinatown Lights

Picture
A different iphone photo of the same street corner in Chinatown on a rainy First Friday evening.  We had just visited the galleries and were heading back to the car.  I like the Van Gogh styling of the lights and reflections, particularly on the manhole cover in the foreground. (11X14 original oil on canvas)

Too Blue

Picture
The Sunday morning sky was a deep cloudless blue in Haleiwa Boat Harbor when this denizen was wokring solo on his own Black Pearl.  The dark hull of the sailboat was a sharp contrast to the many bright whites and lights of the marina. (16X20 original oil on canvas)

Girl with Umbrella

Picture
Another garage painting done from an iphone shot on that same rainy evening in town.   Here the traffic and the reflections of tailights mix with the coming twilight as evening become night in the city. (11x14 original oil on canvas)

Spirit of Kualoa

Picture
Inspired by a print I saw on a trip to Molokai, this image imposes the Ko`olaus at Kualoa with an image of a kanaka maoli wahine.  (11x 14 original oil on canvas)

Hot Head

Picture
In the same vein, this image of daughter Mia and the lava flows at Kalapana blend representations both personal and place-based.  Mia liked it enough to claim it for her room - high praise for an adolescent. (11X14 original oil on canvas)

Rainy Morning

Picture
It was too wet to paint plein air, so we enjoyed a breakfast at Jameson's and then went home to capture this image from an iphone shot.  I like the watercolory wet in wet of the clouds and mist.  (7X14 original oil on canvas)

Anthurium

Picture
This sketch started as a Pegge Hopper imitation and grew into a melded image of Mia and the flower arrengement on our dining room table.   Next year's Christmas card?  (16X20 original oil on canvas)

Low Tide at Mokuleia

Picture
This oild looking west at Mokuleia beach has rocks and drfitwood in the foreground and Kaena Point in the background.  (11x14 oil on canvas)

Sharks' Cove Sunset

Picture
This watercolor is done from an iPhone photo of the sun setting over the protected cove just north of Waimea Bay on O`ahu's North Shore.  Waves break on the rocks and leave still water for snorkeling and wonderful viewing,

Sunrise in Pahoa

This watercolor captures the color of the morning sky over the Pacific looking south along the Puna Coast from Hawaiian Beaches.

Hakipu'u Va'a

Picture
This watercolor captures some of the festive color of the Voyaging Society's Canoe Festival at Kualoa Beach Park from April 2012.

Ko'olaus 1

Picture
This watercolor captures some of the majesty of the Ko`olau range from Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens. (5x7)

Ko`olaus ll

Picture
Another watercolor of the same view taken from an iPhone photo on a late afternoon at Ho`omaluhia.  (8x10)

Mountain Mists

Picture
This oil captures views of the Ko`oalau mountains from Ho`omaluhia Gardens.  A couple was getting married next to the this spot when we visited.   The Panadanus tree rose above the local foliage in contrast to the faded mountains.  (16x20 original oil on canvas)

Foster Grants

Picture
My bride in the brush above Waimea Valley.   The heiau there once hosted fires that could be seen on Kauai.  (11x 14 original oil on canvas)

Off Magic Island

Picture
Brisk winds made for high breakers and good sailing off the south shore rocks at Magic Island.   This watercolor tries to catch a little of both. (1x/14 original)

In Haleiwa Harbor

Picture
This plein air sketch of an old wooden boat and the harbormaster's house could be almost anywhere the land meets the sea.   (11x14 orginal oil)
